چکیده

Time variation during program execution can leak sensitive information. Time variations due to program control flow and hardware resource contention have been used to steal encryption keys in cipher implementations such as AES and RSA. A number of approaches to mitigate timing-based side-channel attacks have been proposed including cache partitioning, controlflow obfuscation and injecting timing noise into the outputs of code. While these techniques make timing-based side-channel attacks more difficult, they do not eliminate the risks. Prior techniques are either too specific or too expensive, and all leave remnants of the original timing side channel for later attackers to attempt to exploit. In this work, we show that the state-of-the-art techniques in timing side-channel protection, which limit timing leakage but do not eliminate it, still have significant vulnerabilities to timing-based side-channel attacks. To provide a means for total protection from timing-based side-channel attacks, we develop Ozone, the first zero timing leakage execution resource for a modern microarchitecture. Code in Ozone execute under a special hardware thread that gains exclusive access to a single core’s resources for a fixed (and limited) number of cycles during which it cannot be interrupted. Memory access under Ozone thread execution is limited to a fixed size uncached scratchpad memory, and all Ozone threads begin execution with a known fixed microarchitectural state. We evaluate Ozone using a number of security sensitive kernels that have previously been targets of timing side-channel attacks, and show that Ozone eliminates timing leakage with minimal performance overhead.

An Integrated Circuit/Architecture Approach to Reducing Leakage in Deep-Submicron High-Performance I-Caches

Deep-submicron CMOS designs maintain high transistor switching speeds by scaling down the supply voltage and proportionately reducing the transistor threshold voltage. Lowering the threshold voltage increases leakage energy dissipation due to subthreshold leakage current even when the transistor is not switching. Estimates suggest a five-fold increase in leakage energy in every future generatio...

SABA: a Zero Timing Overhead Power-Aware BTB for High-Performance Processors

Modern high-performance processors access the branch target buffer (BTB) every cycle to speculate branch target addresses. This aggressive approach improves performance as it results in early identification of target addresses. However, unfortunately, such accesses, quite often, are unnecessary as there is no control flow instruction among those fetched. In this work we introduce Speculative BT...

Banked microarchitectures for complexity-effective superscalar microprocessors

High performance superscalar microarchitectures exploit instruction-level parallelism (ILP) to improve processor performance by executing instructions out of program order and by speculating on branch instructions. Monolithic centralized structures with global communications, including issue windows and register files, are used to buffer in-flight instructions and to maintain machine state. The...

Eye for an Eye: Efficient Concurrent Zero-Knowledge in the Timing Model

We present new and efficient concurrent zero-knowledge protocols in the timing model. In contrast to earlier works—which through artificially-imposed delays require every protocol execution to run at the speed of the slowest link in the network—our protocols essentially only delay messages based on the actual response time of each verifier (which can be significantly smaller). ∗Cornell Universi...

Robots play such remarkable roles in humans’ modern lives that performing many tasks without them isimpossible. Using robotic systems is gradually increasing the tasks allocated to them and they are becomingmore complex and critical. Software reliability is one of the most significant requirements of robots. Forenhancing reliability, systems should be inherently designed to be tolerable of soft...
